Content / Developmental Editing

Welcome to the content / developmental editing page

First, let's define what content / developmental editing involves. Many publishers consider this line editing, and they're not wrong. But… there's also a school of thought that considers line editing as going through the manuscript, line by line, and reading for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and correct word choice. This definition is also correct.

So… for the sake of clarity, content / developmental editing with Starry Sky Editing Services includes…

Story flow / characterization / continuity

Plot / plot holes / continuity

Style / voice continuity

Grammar / punctuation / spelling

Hmm… why did I include the grammar, punctuation, and spelling if that's more of a copy edit function?

The biggest reason is because we're already in the document; let's catch as much as possible by casting a wide net. That said, by the time two rounds (sometimes more) of edits are complete, both the editor and the author start seeing what should be on the page, not always what is on the page. It pays to have that final round of proofreading / copy editing to catch the small, little things that fall through the process.

Again, questions, concerns, or a need for clarity? Please contact me and we'll discuss.

Rates

For a full content / developmental edit, my rate is between $0.05 and $0.07 per word.

If you're looking for something specific in the edit, a different rate can be negotiated. I always try to be flexible whenever possible.
